The December 2019 UGC NET examination in Geography will consists of two question papers i.e. paper-1 and paper-2 through Computer Based Test (CBT). The UGC NET/ JRF syllabus in Geography was last revised in June 2019 and the current NET / SET / JRF examination will be based on the new syllabus only.
The paper-1 of Geography is of general and compulsory for all subjects and will have 50 MCQ question and total 100 marks and it will includes teaching aptitude, research aptitude, comprehension, communication, mathematical reasoning and aptitude, logical reasoning, data interpretation, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), people, development and environment and higher education system.
The paper-2 covers only the syllabus of Geography and will have 100 MCQ question and total 200 marks. The examination for paper-2 will also be Computer Based Test (CBT) through Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) consisting of ascending-descending or sequencing / chronological questions; assertion-reason questions; checkbox or Multiple True / False Questions (MTFQ) or multiple selection questions or Multiple Response Questions (MRQ) or multiple choice-multiple answer questions; matching questions and paragraph or reading comprehension tests paragraph question.
Till November 2017 UGC NET in Geography consists of three papers i.e. paper-1, paper-2 and paper-3. Paper-1 was of general and compulsory for all subjects and paper-2 and paper-3 was based on Geography. However, from June 2018 UGC NET in Geography consists of only two papers i.e. paper-1 and paper-2 (by merging the previous paper-2 and paper-3 into the current paper-2). So, students are requested to go through previous paper-2 and paper-3 both to better prepare themselves for the current paper-2 in Geography.
It is to be noted here that the UGC NET examination in Geography was conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) till June 2014. From December 2014 to June 2018 UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) examination was conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and from Dec. 2018 onwards, the UGC- NET is being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
UGC NET Selection Procedure
The first step for UGC NET Selection Process 2024 is to appear in the exam. For this, you must check the first level of UGC NET selection criteria, i.e., educational eligibility: –
- Master’s degree from a recognized university.
- Minimum 55% marks in master’s degree (for general/general EWS category).
- Minimum 50% marks in master’s degree (for ST/SC/OBC/ PWD/Transgender category).
Qualify for the Exam
To qualify for the UGC NET/JRF and there are certain qualifying marks that you must score in UGC NET 2023 exam.
Refer to the following to know the minimum marks % for the NET exam:
- Aggregate UGC NET qualifying marks for general category (both papers) – 40% marks.
- UGC NET Qualifying marks for OBC and other reserved categories – 35% marks
It would be best to score these minimum UGC NET passing marks to reach the next step of the NET exam selection process.
UGC NET Selection Criteria for Lectureship
- As per the latest NTA notification, only 6% of the appeared candidates will qualify for the exam and become eligible for Assistant Professor.
- A category-wise reservation policy is applied to these 6% qualified candidates for the final UGC NET selection process.

UGC NET Selection Criteria 2024 for JRF
Only 1% out of the total appeared candidates will be eligible for the Junior Research Fellowship.
The qualified candidates for JRF will be selected based on the following formula:

Important Note About Qualifying Criteria for UGC NET 2024
- A similar formula will be used for OBC/SC/ST/Transgender categories for all the subjects.
- The total slots shall be allocated to different categories as per the Government’s Reservation Policy.
- National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the UGC NET Exam in multiple shifts/sessions. The raw score of candidates in all the shifts will be calculated with the help of the normalization procedure, which is called the NTA Score (Percentile)
